Junior Electrical Engineer (GMR 2.1 Support)

  • Durban, South Africa
  • Full-Time
  • On-Site

Job Description:

Junior Electrical Engineer (GMR 2.1 Support)

Location: New Germany, Durban (KZN)
Industry: Property | Energy Wheeling | Embedded Generation

About the Role

A dynamic property and energy wheeling group based in New Germany is seeking a hands-on Junior Electrical Engineer to support the appointed GCC (Government Certificate of Competency) / GMR 2.1 Appointment responsible engineer.

This is a site-driven, practical role, not a desk-based design position.

You will work directly under the responsible engineer, supporting electrical compliance, infrastructure performance, and energy initiatives across multiple operational sites — while developing toward future GMR 2.1 competency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the GCC / GMR 2.1 appointee in ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Assist with site inspections, audits, and compliance reporting
  • Participate in hands-on fault-finding and troubleshooting
  • Support preventative and reactive maintenance planning
  • Assist with implementation of energy solutions (solar, generators, backup systems)
  • Work across multiple sites managing electrical infrastructure
  • Liaise with contractors, technicians, and service providers on-site
  • Maintain technical documentation, compliance records, and asset registers
  • Monitor system performance, downtime, and operational efficiency

Minimum Requirements

  • BSc / BEng / BTech in Electrical Engineering
  • 0–3 years' experience in a practical/operational environment (internships included)
  • Exposure to industrial, manufacturing, facilities, or site-based electrical work
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems, distribution, and safety standards
  • Willingness to work on-site and get involved in operational environments
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel between sites

Non-Negotiable Fit

This role is not suitable for candidates with purely academic or design-based experience.

You must have had exposure to at least one of the following:

  • Plant / factory environments
  • Facilities or building infrastructure
  • Electrical maintenance or site work
  • Panels, distribution boards, generators, or similar systems

Advantageous Experience

  • Exposure to MV/LV systems and distribution networks
  • Experience with solar PV, generators, or backup power systems
  • Interest in energy wheeling / embedded generation
  • Experience working with artisans, contractors, or site teams

What This Role Actually Demands

  • You will be in operational environments where failures have real consequences
  • You will be expected to learn quickly and take ownership early
  • You will be working under a high-accountability engineer — standards are not negotiable

If you prefer structured, slow-paced development, this role will frustrate you.

Why This Role is Valuable

  • Accelerated exposure to real-world electrical operations
  • Direct mentorship under a GCC / GMR 2.1 responsible engineer
  • Fast-track development toward GMR 2.1 readiness
  • Entry into the energy wheeling and embedded generation market, where demand is growing rapidly
